This is a U.S. patent issued to George Devol in 1961. Devol had applied for the patent in 1954. This patent is for his Programmed Article Transfer, which is the precursor to his later invention of a robotic arm.

The stanford arm is a robotic arm that has helped improve the industrial world tremendously. This source is the schematics for the precursor to all modern day assembly arms. The Stanford arm allowed heavier objects to be moved from one place to a nearby place with great speed, and it also allowed for objects too hot for human hands to be moved before they cool.
